RULES FOR A
NST-THRU-HIKE

1 Route

The entire NST route must be hiked (except for the train ride from Sylt to the mainland, necessary ferry connections, and the cable car ride to Rüdesheim).

2 Duration

The thru-hike must be completed within a calendar year (January to December). Some might ask, “Why is that?” But if you think about it, it makes perfect sense, as certain sections become impassable in winter.

Every long-distance trail in the world that is meant to be thru-hiked is subject to these natural laws.

3 Breaks

he NST should be hiked in one continuous journey. Taking a break or multiple zero-days in a row is, of course, possible. Zero-days should be taken when they are physically or mentally necessary—such as in cases of illness, injury, or important professional or family matters. However, they should not be used for attending a music festival or going on a short vacation.

4 Direction

The Nord Süd Trail is preferably hiked from north to south (SoBo). Of course, hiking in the opposite direction (NoBo) or temporarily skipping individual sections (flip-flop) is also allowed!

5 Hall of Fame

Anyone who wants to be inducted into the NST Hall of Fame, must register and verify their Thru-Hike here. We offer various options for this verification, which you can find on the registration page.

Leave no trace

The NST passes through some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Germany. Ensure that it stays this way during your thru-hike by following common outdoor ethics and leaving no trace on the trail!
