The Idea
It was here, on the Rheinsteig, that the idea for a national long-distance hiking trail first began to take shape. Originally planned as training for the Appalachian Trail, YouTuber “Soulboy” realized how incredibly beautiful his own country truly is.
But one question remained: Why isn’t there a thru-hiking trail in Germany? Every year, thousands of hikers travel abroad to walk such trails — yet nothing similar existed at home. Something had to change.
The Rheinsteig can therefore rightfully be called the birthplace of the Nord Süd Trail.
